A typical Sri Lanka itinerary moves between humid coastal heat, cooler hill-country evenings and dusty safari mornings, sometimes within the same week. Packing for all three without overpacking takes a little thought.
Clothing
Light, breathable clothing for the coast and Cultural Triangle; a light jacket or fleece for evenings in Nuwara Eliya or Ella, which can drop to the mid-teens (Celsius) at night. Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) is required at temples, so pack at least one outfit that meets that standard regardless of where else you're headed.
Footwear
Comfortable closed shoes for the Sigiriya climb and hiking around Ella; sandals that slip on and off easily, since shoes come off before entering most temples.
Safari specifics
Neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunglasses and a light scarf or buff for dust on jeep safaris. Binoculars are worth packing if you have them, since jeeps don't always carry spares.
Other essentials
Reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a portable charger for long driving days. A universal adapter is worth packing too, since Sri Lanka uses both Type D and Type G sockets depending on the building.
