Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 metres above sea level, making it the highest city in Sri Lanka. Its cool, misty climate and colonial-era bungalows have earned it the nickname 'Little England', a reference to its history as a British hill-station retreat.
Tea estates and factories
The surrounding hills are covered in tea plantations, and visiting a working tea factory is the main reason most travellers come here. Pedlar's Tea Factory, Blue Field Tea Centre, and Mackwoods Labookellie all offer factory tours and tastings, explaining the process from leaf to cup.
The views across the plantations are spectacular, particularly in the early morning when the mist clears to reveal rows of neatly clipped tea bushes stretching across the hillsides.
Colonial landmarks and gardens
In town, the Grand Hotel and the post office remain from the British era, and the nearby Victoria Park — a carefully manicured garden — is a pleasant spot for a stroll. The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, one of the oldest in Asia, is also worth a visit even if you don't play.
For those with extra time, the climb to Single Tree Hill or the nearby Horton Plains National Park offers views across the highlands.
Our recommendation
Nuwara Eliya is best visited during the dry months of January to April, when the weather is crisp and clear. The temperature drops significantly at night, so pack warm layers even during the day.
Spend two nights here to allow for a tea factory tour, a round of golf, and a day trip to Horton Plains — the train journey from Kandy or onward to Ella is also worth building into the itinerary.
