Ella is a compact, laid-back town perched on the edge of Sri Lanka's central highlands. Its main attraction is the scenery: tea plantations cascade down steep ridgelines, and the valley below opens up to views of the southern plains.
The Nine Arches Bridge
Just outside town, the Nine Arches Bridge is one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks. This colonial-era viaduct is still in use today, and trains pass over it several times daily. The best time to see it is early morning, when the mist hangs low and the trains emerge through the tea fields.
The walk from Ella town to the bridge passes through jungle and alongside the railway tracks, taking about 30–40 minutes each way.
Hikes and viewpoints
Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak are the town's two most popular hikes. Little Adam's Peak is the easier of the two — a 45-minute climb through tea plantations to a summit with panoramic views across the valley. Ella Rock is longer and more strenuous, requiring 2–3 hours round-trip and offering a more expansive vista.
For a quieter option, the trek to Diyaluma Falls — Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall — is a rewarding full-day excursion from Ella.
Our recommendation
Arrive in Ella by train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya — the journey itself is a highlight. Spend two nights to allow time for both hikes and a relaxing afternoon at one of the many cafés overlooking the valley.
The dry season from December to March offers the clearest views, but Ella's elevation keeps it cool year-round, making it a pleasant escape from the coastal heat.
